Research centers affiliated with the UC Davis Department of Economics
Collaborative research flourishes within the UC Davis Department of Economics, fostered in part by several distinguished research centers based here.
- Center for Poverty and Inequality Research is one of only three federally designated centers intended to facilitate non-partisan academic research on poverty in the U.S., disseminate this research, and train the next generation of poverty scholars.. The center, established in 2011 through a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to study the effectiveness of policies intended to reduce poverty, offers opportunities for involvement of undergraduate and graduate students. It is co-directed by Economics faculty member Marianne Page and Sociology faculty member Jacob Hibel.
- The Global Migration Cluster leads several UC Davis-based research projects analyzing the impact of international migrations on economies and societies. Economists, sociologists, political scientists, historians, demographers and law scholars work collaboratively in the cluster, which was established in 2013 and operates with grant funding under the direction of Professor Giovanni Peri. The cluster organizes workshops, conferences and other events in which graduate and undergraduate students participate.
- The Davis Energy Economics Program (DEEP) serves as an intellectual hub through which the Davis energy economics community, industry leaders and policymakers can gather and exchange ideas, research and information on the obstacles and opportunities facing today’s energy sector. Economics faculty members James Bushnell (co-director), David Rapson (co-director) and Erich Muehlegger lead research programs on several aspects of energy and environmental markets. Their teaching and research focuses on topics ranging from fuel and carbon markets to consumer behavior and industrial organization.
- The All-UC Group in Economic History was founded in 1972 to energize faculty and graduate students from all campuses of the University of California. It operated until 2023 under the direction of Professor Greg Clark of the UC Davis Department of Economics. Although funding from the UC Office of the President has been eliminated, faculty are still active. - Center for International Data collects and disseminates data on U.S. and world import and export markets, tariffs and other economic data pertinent to international trade. The center, directed by Economics Professor Robert Feenstra, routinely provides opportunities to graduate and undergraduate students to use data for their research.
