Following the campus guidelines for Coronavirus all UC Davis classes, lectures, seminars, labs and discussion sections will move to virtual instruction and remain virtual through the end of Summer Session 2021, including final exams. Given this, the department’s administrative functions have moved to remote work conditions. To contact staff members of the department via e-mail or phone, please go to our administrative staff contact page.  We anticipate a return to campus for Fall 2021.

The American Dream Is an Illusion

Gregory Clark writes for Foreign Affairs on Immigration and Inequality

Gregory Clark's (professor of Economics) new piece in the latest issue of Foreign Affairs looks at the nexus between immigration and inequality. "Given current patterns of immigration to the United States, Washington faces an enormous policy challenge," Clark says. "[...] in reality, social mobility rates are extremely low" so that "Immigrant groups with a low social status at the time of their arrival historically had a more difficult time integrating." Clark concludes that "The United States is not exceptional in its rates of social mobility. It can perform no special alchemy on the disadvantaged populations of any society in order to transform their life opportunities."
