James Beall: Senior Actuarial Assistant

"Studying Economics at UC Davis prepared me to look beyond the numbers when reviewing my work."

Name: James Beall
Current Position: Senior Actuarial Assistant, California Department of Insurance
Graduation Year: 2013

What do you do as a senior actuarial assistant?

Actuaries use math to analyze business risk, usually related to insurance and investment products. Since I began my career I’ve been involved in a variety of projects, including reserves analysis for life companies, determining benefit richness for non-standard health plans on the California ACA exchange, and supporting state investigations into senior financial abuse involving insurance products.

How did your UC Davis education prepare you for this work?

Studying Economics at UC Davis prepared me to look beyond the numbers when reviewing my work. We live in a data-driven world, and economics helps anchor our interpretations of that data to market forces and the real world.
